Inside the Pickleball Boom: How We Got Here and Where We’re Headed

Blink and suddenly every tennis court in America had new lines on it.

Pickleball wasted zero time going from backyard curiosity to full-blown takeover. Courts fill before the sun comes up while group texts fight over open play slots. Leagues, tournaments, and clinics have turned a once casual game into something far more serious.

Still paddle-less? Fair warning. You are late to the party.

So how did pickleball accelerate this fast, and where does it go from here?

How Pickleball Took Over

Pickleball arrived at the perfect moment during peak covid lockdown. While the world shut down the courts started popping up. It became a way to stay connected in a safe environment while also getting out and moving your body.

It’s easy to learn, social by nature, and competitive without being intimidating (most of the time). It gives former athletes, weekend warriors, and total beginners a way to play together.

The result was a surge that never slowed down.

Over 36 million Americans now play pickleball. Indoor facilities are opening across major metro areas. Professional tours continue to expand. Media coverage keeps climbing. And most importantly, equipment innovation is moving faster than ever.

Where the Game Is Thriving

Some cities became pickleball hotspots almost instantly. Florida leads the charge with year-round play and a dense concentration of courts and training facilities. Arizona, Texas, and California follow closely behind, fueled by warm climates and strong recreational sports cultures.

Major metros are now catching up. Austin, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, and New York are seeing explosive court development and facility investment. Pickleball is no longer limited to public parks and rec centers. Dedicated venues, entertainment complexes, restaurants, and event spaces are becoming part of the playing experience, transforming pickleball into both sport and social scene.

Standout Brands and People Shaping the Sport

Pickleball’s rise has been driven by brands and voices that understand both performance and culture.

Centerline Athletics is one we keep coming back to. Their gear feels like it was designed by people who actually spend time on court. Clean design. Purpose behind every detail with nothing overdone. Their upcoming launches have us genuinely excited, and you can shop Centerline on our site while saving a little in the process. Their lineup fits naturally alongside the performance standard we believe players deserve.

Paddletek has earned serious respect across the sport. Ask around at almost any facility and you will hear their name. Players trust the feel and consistency, so that when the match tightens up, their paddle will respond the way they expect. That level of reliability does not happen by luck. It comes from years of engineering focused on playability.

Pickleheads has become one of the most trusted resources in the sport, and for good reason. They cut through the noise and focus on what actually helps players. We appreciate how seriously they test products and how honest they are about performance. No fluff or participation trophies. So when their rankings dropped and XRZ™ landed in the number one spot for pickleball shoes, we will admit we read it twice just to be sure. Recognition like that carries weight because players know Pickleheads does the homework before making the call.

Then there is Zane Navratil, who has helped shape modern pickleball in a way few people have. You see it in his results. You hear it in his podcast. You feel it in the way he breaks the game down so players can actually learn something instead of just watching highlights. Zane brings high-level performance while keeping the personality that makes the sport so addictive. Competitive edge mixed with community spirit. Exactly where pickleball thrives.

The Hidden Cost of Explosive Growth

More players means more energy around the sport. It also means more injuries. ER visits tied to pickleball keep climbing with more falls and lower body injuries showing up across every age group. It’s easy to forget the physical demand until your body reminds you.

Let’s talk player to player for a second.

You know that moment when someone speeds one up and you have to chase it down? You push off hard. You lunge. You try to stop on a dime.

Now picture doing that in a soft running shoe. That foam compresses the second you plant. Your foot slides. Your ankle wobbles while it looks for stability and your body reacts before you even think about it.

All from a shoe that was never built for side-to-side movement.

Plenty of players focus on paddles and drills. Footwear often becomes an afterthought. The quiet truth is that the wrong shoe can put you in a vulnerable position before the point even starts.

What Makes SQAIRZ Different

The SQAIRZ XRZ™ Pickleball Shoe was engineered from the ground up for the unique movements of pickleball. It’s not a repurposed tennis shoe or a softened-up runner — it’s a stability platform designed for balance, power, and injury prevention.

  • Lower profile = more control. XRZ™ sits flatter to the ground, eliminating the dangerous “tilt” of cushioned running shoes.

  • Structured support = joint alignment. A reinforced heel counter and lateral outrigger keep your foot centered — so your hips, knees, and ankles move in sync.

  • Roomier toe box = better balance. Our patented design allows your toes to splay naturally, increasing ground contact and stability.

  • Comfort without compromise. The new GripSync™ removable insole provides responsive cushioning while maintaining your connection to the court.

In independent balance testing, players wearing SQAIRZ improved their stability by 15.5% on average compared to leading athletic brands like ASICS, HOKA, and HEAD — with some showing improvements of over 30%.

If you’re playing once a week, or even just a couple times a month, your footwear choice matters more than you think. Running shoes might seem “good enough,” but the risk isn’t worth it — not when there’s a shoe built specifically for the sport you’re playing.

Where Pickleball Is Headed

Pickleball’s growth curve shows no signs of slowing. More facilities and more tournaments are popping up everywhere. The sport is shifting from recreational pastime into a fully developed competitive ecosystem and with that comes deeper performance innovation from many brands.

We are proud to be part of pickleball’s next chapter as we advance footwear through proven technology. As competition rises, performance and safety will shape what comes next. SQAIRZ will help lead that future.
