This Boutique Wedge Is 3D-Printed From a Lattice of Stainless Steel — and Acey Golf Says Sole Grinds Are a “Junk Science” Scam

Based on the transcript from this Life At The Turn Live Q&A, here’s the post:

Most wedge companies tell you the answer is more options — more grinds, more bounce numbers, more confusion. Acey Golf founder Andy Chick disagrees, and he’s betting his entire boutique brand on it. In this Life At The Turn Live Q&A, Chick — a former Cleveland Golf R&D man turned “solopreneur” — walks through the Acey 263, a metal 3D-printed wedge that uses algorithmic design and a steel lattice structure to do what traditional casting can’t: move mass closer to the center of the face instead of the perimeter.

▶ Watch the full conversation: youtube.com/watch?v=DV9-_bEObzo

5 Takeaways From the Interview

1. The wedge is 3D-printed from 316L stainless steel — and that changes everything.
Instead of casting a solid head and adding mass to the edges, the Acey 263 uses a lattice structure printed in 316L stainless steel. That lets Chick redistribute weight toward the face center, which he says improves MOI, forgiveness, feel, spin, and vibration dampening in one stroke.

2. Algorithmic design replaces the R&D department.
Chick’s vision: one person armed with computational design tools can iterate like an entire OEM department. As he puts it, “the software and the design process… can make someone like myself as efficient as an entire department.” Golf, he says, “is all about accuracy and consistency.”

**3. He thinks sole and grind optionality is **overrated.
This is the contrarian heart of the brand. Chick argues the industry over-complicates bounce and grind options, overwhelming average golfers instead of helping them. His counter: a more versatile sole design that removes the decision anxiety — “just because you can make anything doesn’t mean you should.”

4. Direct-to-consumer, built one club at a time.
As a solo founder, Chick personally builds every club — acting as designer, builder, and quality control. He skips retail entirely, and despite premium costs (he admits to making roughly 50% on each wedge, versus cast clubs made “by the hundreds of thousands for a few dozen dollars”), he deliberately “bears the burden of that cost rather than the customer.” An ambassador program is next.

5. Vertical integration is the long game — and customization is coming.
Down the road, Chick wants to vertically integrate as volumes grow, and expand beyond the 263. The founding principle, though? A wedge that’s simpler to buy, better built, and engineered around the player — not a spec sheet.

The Bottom Line

The Acey 263 is a fascinating case study in what happens when one obsessive engineer, a metal 3D printer, and a contrarian take on “golf tradition” collide. Whether it’s the future of wedge design or a boutique curiosity is up to the golfers who actually roll it in.

The interview goes deeper than the highlights here — into the design math, the struggles of a solo brand, and where golf tech is heading.
