Algya earns medalist honors as Lions outlast UNLV, Texas A&M in windy finale

KAUA‘I, Hawai‘i – There was plenty for Loyola Marymount to love on Valentine’s Day on Kaua‘i. The Lions captured both the team and individual titles at the 49th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, finishing 10-under-par for a five-shot victory at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala.

Loyola Marymount celebrates their team title in the 2026 John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Feb. 14, 2026, at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala in Lihue, Kaua‘i.

No. 38 UNLV and No. 32 Texas A&M tied for second at 5-under-par. UNLV and Utah were the defending team co-champions.

Loyola Marymount’s Trevor Algya watches his tee shot on the par-3 14th hole on Feb. 14, 2026, at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala in Lihue, Kaua‘i.

No. 19 New Mexico finished fourth at 1-under, followed by No. 42 Long Beach State at 1-over. No. 23 Utah placed sixth at 5-over.

“We had a fantastic week against challenging conditions,” remarked Loyola Marymount men’s golf coach, Jason D’Amore. A former Lion and the only player in program history to earn first-team All-WCC honors in all four seasons, D’Amore said his team’s focus was clear from the start. “Our goal was to be the most mentally tough team. To come away with victory in paradise is something we’re incredibly grateful for.”

Loyola Marymount junior Trevor Algya claimed medalist honors, navigating consistent trade winds and wet conditions to secure the individual title.

Algya’s victory marked his second collegiate win in Hawai‘i. He previously swept both the individual and team titles at the 2023 Kapolei Invitational on Oʻahu, guiding the Lions to a championship finish on another Troon Hawai‘i property. In tribute to the late Hawaiian music legend Israel “Bruddah IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole, Algya’s teammates have since nicknamed him “Hawaiian Sup’pa Man.”

“It was hard. The wind was blowing, making it a mental and physical battle,” Algya said. “It’s easy to let things go when challenges arise, but an awesome reward awaits when you remain tough.”

Missouri’s Virgilio Paz eyes his drive on the par-4 9th hole on Feb. 14, 2026, at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala in Lihue, Kaua‘i.

Missouri senior Virgilio Paz, runner-up at the 2026 Latin America Amateur Championship, tied for 49th at 4-over (71-73-73).

UNLV’s Zach Little tees off on the par-3 5th hole on Feb. 14, 2026, at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala in Lihue, Kaua‘i.

UNLV senior Zach Little, a 2025 Burns co-individual champion who set the Ocean Course’s par-70 scoring record with a 7-under 63 in last year’s second round, tied for 14th (70-69-71).

Utah junior Gabriel Palacios, also a 2025 Burns co-individual champion and PING NCAA Division I All-America honorable mention, rebounded from an opening 75 to finish tied for 30th (75-71-68).

Utah’s Sergio Jimenez closely observes his tee shot the par-3 8th hole on Feb. 14, 2026, at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala in Lihue, Kaua‘i.

Fellow Utah junior Sergio Jimenez, the first-round leader and winner of the 2024 Palouse Collegiate, finished tied for 7th (66-69-72).

Long Beach State senior Jack Cantlay, the 2023 Big West Freshman of the Year and brother of 2021 FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay, tied for 14th (70-67-73).

Hawai‘i’s Nathan Szpakowicz watches his tee shot the par-3 17th hole on Feb. 14, 2026, at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala in Lihue, Kaua‘i.

Host Hawai‘i was led by sophomore Nathan Szpakowicz and senior James Whitworth, who tied for 51st. The Rainbow Warriors next compete at the Wyoming Desert Classic, scheduled for Feb. 23-25 in Palm Desert, California.
