Phil Mickelson to miss 2026 Masters: Three-time champion out of field due to personal health matter

Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson announced Thursday that he will not be playing in the 2026 Masters due to a personal health matter within his family. Mickelson, 55, has only missed one Masters (2022) since 1995, finishing runner-up as recently as 2023.

“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” Mickelson released in a statement on social media. “I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club, and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best luck and will be watching.”

Mickelson was set to make his 33rd start in the Masters this year. The left-hander is one of eight players to win at least three green jackets and one of seven to claim a Masters championship along with low amateur honors (1991) in his career. Mickelson’s 16 finishes inside the top 10 across 32 Masters ranks second behind only Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan. His scoring average at Augusta National remains under par at 71.44 across 120 rounds.

The six-time major champion has been sidelined for the early portion of 2026 due to an ongoing health matter at home. Playing primarily on LIV Golf, Mickelson missed the league’s first four events of the season. He made his 2026 debut a couple of weeks ago at LIV Golf South Africa, where he shot 7 under and finished T48 in a 57-man field.

“We know how much Phil loves the Masters Tournament, and he will be missed by everyone in Augusta next week,” Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley released in a statement. “He has our complete support as he takes time to be with his family.”

The 2026 Masters will mark the first since 1994 that will not feature either Mickelson or Tiger Woods. The two have combined to win eight green jackets over the last three decades and have become synonymous with the first major championship of the season. Their absence also means that they will not be in attendance for Rory McIlroy’s Champions Dinner.

Woods announced Tuesday that he plans to step away from golf for an indefinite period of time to focus on his health. The 50-year-old was arrested last Friday for DUI with property damage and refusal to submit a DUI test following a two-car crash near his home. On Wednesday, a Florida judge granted Woods’ request to travel outside the United States for treatment at an inpatient facility.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself today,” Woods released in his statement. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work towards lasting recovery.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
