Nelly Korda equalled an LPGA Tour record by winning her fifth tournament in a row as she claimed the first women’s major of the year at the Chevron Championship in Texas.

The 25-year-old American finished the last seven holes of her third round on Sunday morning, parring in to post a 69 and sit in a tie for second alongside Brooke Henderson, one shot back of 54-hole leader Haeran Ryu. And she closed out her second major victory of her career by shooting her third 69 of the week a gusty day at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands to finish on 13 under and win by two shots from Sweden’s Maja Stark.

First round leader Lauren Coughlin closed with a 68 to finish joint third on 10 under alongside Henderson, with Ryu’s closing 74 seeing her drop to fifth.

“It’s just been a crazy, crazy, crazy couple of weeks, with some really solid golf. I can finally breathe,” said a shivering Korda in her post-match press conference, following her a tournament tradition leap into the lake by the 18th hole. “I was really nervous on that back nine. I really, really wanted this win, and It feels amazing to get it.”

She added: “My first ever major was at the US Women’s Open in 2013 – when I was 14 – and that was when I first dreamt of winning major championships, so to have two under my belt now is a dream come true.”

Korda joins Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only other player since 1978 to win five consecutive titles and will have a chance to top that pair next week as she is currently scheduled to play in the JM Eagle LA Championship.

Further down the leaderboard, English trio Georgia Hall, Charley Hull and Lottie Woad – who won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur earlier this month – all ended the tournament in a share of 23rd place, on one under.
