2023 Wells Fargo Championship odds, picks, predictions, field: Proven golf expert fading Rory McIlroy

The world’s top two golfers will be absent, but that won’t take much shine off the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship, which tees off Thursday at Quail Hollow. Forty of the world’s top 50 golfers are in the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship field, led by three-time Wells Fargo champion Rory McIlroy. The designated PGA Tour event features numerous other golfers with strong track records on the Charlotte, N.C. course that hosted last year’s Presidents Cup. They include Max Homa, the 2019 tournament champion who also won last year’s title at TPC Potomac. Homa and Tony Finau, who won last week’s Mexico Open, helped the Americans win the Presidents Cup in 2022. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay also played big roles, and they are among nine golfers from that 12-man team who are set to tee off Thursday.

McIlroy is the 15-2 favorite in the latest Wells Fargo Championship odds at Caesars Sportsbook, followed by Cantlay (14-1), Xander Schauffele (16-1) and Finau (17-1). Spieth is priced at 19-1, and American teammates Thomas, Collin Moriakawa and Cameron Young are all at 21-1, along with Viktor Hovland. Homa is at 24-1, and Sam Burns (31-1) is the other Team USA star in the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship field. Before making any 2023 Wells Fargo Championship picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from SportsLine golf insider Sia Nejad.

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He’s had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. In 2022, he hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, SportsLine debuted “The Early Wedge,” and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners.

Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks (including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays). He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span. Anyone following him saw some huge returns.

Now, Nejad has studied the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of Nejad’s PGA picks and analysis.

Top 2023 Wells Fargo Championship expert picks

In one major shocker for this week, Nejad says “there’s simply no chance” he can back McIlroy. The expert is fading the Northern Irishman despite his three victories and six other top-10 results at Quail Hollow. “At this point in the season, I’m not even sure he’s a deserving favorite,” Nejad says. The 33-year-old has one victory this season, but it came in October, and he has finished outside the top 25 in four of his seven events. He has missed the cut in his past two stroke-play tournaments and ranks 174th in driving accuracy and 156th in greens in regulation.

On the other hand, Nejad says Hovland is “a great course fit” and adds that the 25-year-old is “on the precipice of winning a big event.” The young Norwegian defended his title at the unofficial Hero World Challenge in December, beating Scheffler for the second time. He has seven international victories in his brief career, including three on the PGA Tour. Hovland has top-10 finishes at the Players Championship (T-3) and the Masters (T-7) in the past two months. His T-59 at the RBC Heritage isn’t a major concern, as he ranks fourth in total driving and 11th in scoring average. See who he is backing at SportsLine.

How to make 2023 Wells Fargo Championship golf picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship and is picking his longshots, including one who comes in at around 50-1 odds. This golfer has the elite iron play that will be needed to succeed at Quail Hollow and is “not afraid to rise up on the leaderboard on Sundays.” See who it is at SportsLine.

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship? And which golfer could bring a huge payday of around 50-1? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Sia Nejad’s top prop picks for Wells Fargo Championship 2023, all from the expert who is was up more than 70 units in a recent three-month span, and find out.
