2023 U.S. Open odds, top picks, predictions, field: Golf expert dodging Scottie Scheffler at Los Angeles CC

Matt Fitzpatrick won the RBC Heritage in April and has consecutive top-20 finishes heading into Thursday’s 2023 U.S. Open. Fitzpatrick, the defending champion, is part of a loaded 2023 U.S. Open field that will take on Los Angeles Country Club as the city hosts a major for the first time since 1948. Brooks Koepka is the last golfer to win consecutive U.S. Opens (2017-18) and will look for consecutive major titles after winning the PGA Championship last month. Among the many other stars in the 2023 U.S. Open lineup are world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, reigning Masters champ Jon Rahm and multiple major winners like Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. Scheffler (13-2), Rahm (8-1) and Koepka (17-2) are the favorites in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 U.S. Open odds.

Viktor Hovland (10-1) and Rory McIlroy (11-1) are right behind, and Patrick Cantlay (14-1) and Max Homa (16-1) also are among the favorites among the 2023 U.S. Open contenders. Before making any 2023 U.S. Open picks, see the PGA predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad.

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He’s had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. At the Wells Fargo, he had Wyndham Clark among his longshot outrights, backing the 75-1 shot before he dominated at Quail Hollow for his first PGA Tour victory.

In 2022, Nejad hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, Sportsline debuted “The Early Wedge,” and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners. Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks, including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays. He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2023 U.S. Open field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See all his picks at SportsLine.

Top 2023 U.S. Open expert picks

One shocker from Nejad: The expert is fading Scottie Scheffler, even though he’s the No. 1 player in the world. The expert knows the world’s top-ranked golfer has been racking up strong finishes all season, but he has concerns about Scheffler’s putter. Scheffler has five straight top-five finishes, but his performance on the greens has kept him from winning. His last victory was at the Players Championship in March, and the 26-year-old ranks 146th in strokes gained putting. He has lost 13 strokes on the greens over his past two events, though both were top-three finishes. “I just can’t bet him at such a small number,” Nejad told SportsLine.

On the other hand, Nejad sees value in Patrick Cantlay as he tries to put past major disappointments behind him. Cantlay hasn’t broken through in a major, but he has seven top-10 finishes this season and is fifth on tour in scoring average (69.57). His performance off the tee will be an advantage at LACC, as he leads the tour in total driving (12th in accuracy, 26th in distance). Cantlay is seventh in greens in regulation and fifth in strokes gained total. “It’s simply inevitable that his complete game comes around and starts clicking in these huge spots,” Nejad says. See who to back here.

How to make 2023 U.S. Open golf picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the U.S. Open 2023 and is picking several longshots, including one player who’s priced higher than 50-1. This golfer’s results “have continued in a positive trajectory,” and the expert expects him to make a strong run. You can only see his 2023 U.S. Open picks at SportsLine.
