2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds, field, picks, predictions: Golf expert fading Max Homa at Detroit Golf Club

It could be the week for an overlooked player to break through on the PGA Tour at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. The tournament tees off Thursday at Detroit Country Club, and after a run of elite PGA Tour fields, many of the top players are taking some time off. Max Homa, the ninth-ranked golfer in the world, and defending champion Tony Finau (No. 14) are the cream of the crop this week. Eight of the top 30 are in the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic field. Rickie Fowler and Travelers Championship winner Keegan Bradley also will be in the mix. Two of the four winners in Detroit have been first-time champions, while young stars like Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg will be among those aiming to become the third.

Five golfers are priced shorter than 20-1 in the latest 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic golf odds from Caesars Sportsbook, led by Finau at 12-1. The others are Fowler (14-1), Justin Thomas (14-1), Collin Morikawa (14-1) and Homa (18-1). Hideki Matsuyama (20-1), Tom Kim (22-1), Sungjae Im (22-1) and Bradley (28-1) also are among the favorites. Hojgaard and Aberg are both priced at 60-1 in the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023 field. Before locking in any 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic picks, make sure you see the PGA predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad.

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He’s had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. At the Wells Fargo, he had Clark among his longshot outrights, backing the 75-1 shot before he dominated at Quail Hollow for his first PGA Tour victory.

In 2022, Nejad hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, Sportsline debuted “The Early Wedge,” and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners. Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks (including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays). He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine.

Top 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic expert picks

One stunning prediction from Nejad: Homa’s struggles will continue in Detroit, so the expert is fading the two-time winner this season. Homa is one of the few golfers in this field with multiple victories in 2022-23, but his most recent one came at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January. Since then, the 32-year-old has missed four cuts and finished outside the top 40 in both majors. “I don’t expect him to fully turn it around in Detroit,” Nejad says. Homa also has cracked the top 25 once in three tries at Detroit Golf Club, and that was a tie for 24th last year.

Meanwhile, Fowler has been rolling the past few months, and Nejad says “it’s hard to look away” from him. The 34-year-old has long been a fan favorite, and he’s playing as well as he ever has. Fowler was in contention at the U.S. Open before tying for ninth, and he followed with a T-13 last week. That was his eighth top-15 finish in his past nine tournaments. “It’s just a matter of time before he closes the deal and wins a tournament,” Nejad says. Fowler ranks 11th on tour in scoring average (69.58) and seventh in strokes gained approach, a key stat in Detroit. See who to pick at SportsLine.
