2023 British Open odds, golf picks, field, date: Surprising PGA predictions by model that’s called 9 majors

The year’s final major, the 2023 Open Championship, begins on Thursday, July 20 from Royal Liverpool in England. Only one golfer has notched top-10s in the year’s first three majors, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He is the second-favorite, per Caesars Sportsbook, in the latest 2023 Open Championship odds at 9-1. While Scheffler has been on a strong run, the Open Championship is the only major he’s never placed in the top five and he finished 21st a year ago. Others with considerably more Open Championship success include past champions like Rory McIlroy (9-1), Jordan Spieth (18-1) and Cameron Smith (20-1).

The 2023 Open Championship field trails Spaniard Jon Rahm (15-2) on the Open Championship 2023 odds board. Before locking in any 2023 Open Championship picks, be sure to see the 2023 Open Championship predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm’s second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at +7000, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure’s best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, even though he hadn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2018.

This same model has also nailed a whopping nine majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 Open Championship field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2023 Open Championship leaderboard.

Top 2023 Open Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Open Championship 2023: Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles at Royal Liverpool and doesn’t even crack the top 10. Spieth is a proven winner on the PGA Tour, having racked up 13 career victories, which includes winning the Open Championship in 2017 at Royal Birkdale.

However, the 29-year-old has struggled mightily in recent weeks. Spieth has missed the cut three times since the start of May, which includes missing the weekend at the U.S. Open. His struggles can be directly attributed to his inability to find the fairway off the tee. Spieth ranks 88th in total driving (193) and 137th in driving accuracy (55.85%). He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Open Championship 2023 field. See which golfers to fade here.

Another surprise: Tommy Fleetwood, a 30-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The Englishman is the No. 20 golfer in the world after being outside the top 40 a year ago. He’s placed in the top 20 in five of his last six events and had back-to-back top-fives at the Canadian Open and U.S. Open. Fleetwood has also shown his mettle at The Open, with top-fives in two of his last three starts.

Fleetwood is one of the few players with virtually no holes in his game, as he ranks among the top 25% on the PGA Tour in every strokes gained category. That includes top-10 marks in tee-to-green (1.501) and around-the-green (0.442), in addition to ranking sixth on tour in scoring average (69.418). Because Fleetwood splits his time between the PGA Tour and the European Tour, he often goes overlooked, but his metrics, tournament history and long odds make him a name to consider in 2023 Open Championship bets, according to the model. See who else to pick here.

How to make 2023 Open Championship picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with Open Championship odds 2023 of 20-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s 2023 Open Championship picks here.

So, who will win the Open Championship 2023, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the 2023 Open Championship odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected 2023 Open Championship leaderboard, all from the model that’s nailed nine golf majors, including this year’s Masters.
