Us Vs Your Regular Sneakers: Why Running Shoes Don’t Belong On The Pickleball Court

We’ve all done it.
You grab your paddle, head to the courts, and realize your old running shoes are still sitting by the door. They’re comfortable, broken in, and feel fine for a casual game, until they don’t.

A few lunges later, your ankles start to ache. By the next morning, your knees are stiff. That’s when you realize what every experienced player eventually learns the hard way: pickleball is not a running sport and running shoes are one of the fastest ways to get hurt.

The Hidden Problem With Running Shoes

Running shoes are built for forward motion — soft, tall, and designed to cushion repetitive heel-to-toe impact. On the pickleball court, that same softness works against you.

Every side-step, cut, and plant forces your foot to roll over unstable foam. The higher heel lift puts you farther from the ground, and the narrow base leaves you teetering with every change of direction. What feels “bouncy” during a run turns dangerous when you’re trying to stop on a dime.

Pickleball is a lateral sport with constant stop-start motion, pivots, and cross-body torque. It’s tough on your hips, knees, and ankles, especially if your footwear wasn’t designed for it.

The Cost of the Wrong Shoes

We’ve already talked about this in our “Cost of the Wrong Shoes” blog — but it’s worth repeating.
The wrong shoes are responsible for some of the most common (and preventable) pickleball injuries:

  • Ankle sprains and rolls from unstable midsoles

  • Knee strain and MCL irritation from uneven landings

  • Hip and lower back pain caused by lack of alignment and ground contact

  • Plantar fasciitis from shoes that compress instead of support

According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, over 19,000 pickleball-related injuries were treated in U.S. emergency rooms last year — and a large percentage were lower-body injuries linked to footwear instability.

Your shoes are either helping your mechanics or fighting them. There’s no in-between.

What Makes SQAIRZ Different

The SQAIRZ XRZ™ Pickleball Shoe was engineered from the ground up for the unique movements of pickleball. It’s not a repurposed tennis shoe or a softened-up runner — it’s a stability platform designed for balance, power, and injury prevention.

  • Lower profile = more control. XRZ™ sits flatter to the ground, eliminating the dangerous “tilt” of cushioned running shoes.

  • Structured support = joint alignment. A reinforced heel counter and lateral outrigger keep your foot centered — so your hips, knees, and ankles move in sync.

  • Roomier toe box = better balance. Our patented design allows your toes to splay naturally, increasing ground contact and stability.

  • Comfort without compromise. The new GripSync™ removable insole provides responsive cushioning while maintaining your connection to the court.

In independent balance testing, players wearing SQAIRZ improved their stability by 15.5% on average compared to leading athletic brands like ASICS, HOKA, and HEAD — with some showing improvements of over 30%.

That’s measurable protection against the kind of instability that causes most lower-body injuries in pickleball.

If You’re Wearing These, Read This

If you’ve been wearing a different shoe on court — you’re not alone. We’ve compared SQAIRZ against nearly every major brand out there, and the results speak for themselves.

  • Wilson – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats Wilson in Pickleball
Wilson’s comfort-first approach collapses under pressure. Soft foam and narrow platforms make it hard to plant, cut, and recover — the exact moments where XRZ™ shines.

  • Head – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats Head in Pickleball
Head’s traction pattern might grab the court, but it doesn’t keep you balanced. We broke down how their uneven base throws off alignment and costs you control.

  • Skechers – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats Skechers in Pickleball
Pillow-like cushioning feels good standing still, but on the court it’s a liability. Too much bounce, not enough structure — a classic case of comfort over control.

  • K-Swiss – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats K-Swiss in Pickleball
Don’t confuse “wide” with “stable.” K-Swiss focuses on fit, not function, while SQAIRZ’s geometric base actually supports side-to-side movement and balance.

  • HOKA – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats HOKA in Pickleball
Their cloud-like midsoles are great for running — not for quick stops or pivots. We showed how too much stack height makes you a half-inch closer to an ankle roll.

  • ASICS – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats ASICS in Pickleball
A solid tennis heritage doesn’t automatically translate to pickleball. Our testing proved that traditional “court shoe” setups can’t handle pickleball’s shorter, sharper footwork.

  • Nike – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats Nike in Pickleball
Big-brand flash meets small-platform performance. Nike’s high arch and narrow midsole reduce contact area, limiting power transfer and balance through your base.

  • Cypher – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats Cypher in Pickleball
Ultralight construction comes at a cost — lateral collapse. The XRZ™ provides structured resistance that keeps your foot secure when you drive or pivot.

  • Tyrol – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats Tyrol in Pickleball
Built for casual players, not competitors. We found Tyrol’s materials break down fast under torque, while SQAIRZ maintains its stability set after set.

  • DAPS – Why SQAIRZ XRZ™ Beats DAPS in Pickleball
DAPS delivers flash and color — but when you measure performance, the XRZ™ outperforms it in balance, durability, and underfoot comfort by a wide margin.

Each comparison dives deeper into why traditional athletic shoes — even ones marketed for “court sports” — fail when put to the test in real pickleball motion.

The Bottom Line

If you’re playing once a week, or even just a couple times a month, your footwear choice matters more than you think. Running shoes might seem “good enough,” but the risk isn’t worth it — not when there’s a shoe built specifically for the sport you’re playing.

The XRZ™ gives you stability, balance, and protection for your knees, hips, and future on the court.

You wouldn’t wear sandals to run a marathon. So why wear running shoes to play pickleball?
