Sergio Garcia to miss first Major Championship in 24 years

Sergio Garcia is to miss a major for the first time in 24 years after the 43-year-old Spaniard’s name wasn’t among those listed in the field by the PGA of America for the US PGA Championship, which is being held at Oak Hill in New York from May 18-21.

Since joining LIV Golf, whose tournaments carry no world ranking points, Garcia has dropped to 189th in the table, slipping out of the top 100 for the first time in 23 years last November.

Following his dramatic fall down the rankings, the 2017 Masters champion, who resigned his PGA Tour membership last June and his DP World Tour membership last week, is no longer given an automatic exemption into the PGA Championship.

Despite Garcia’s absence there will be 18 LIV Golf players in the field for the season’s second major championship, including Paul Casey, who received a special invitation. The 44-year-old Englishman is currently 131rd in the world. He finished fourth at the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, but ruled himself out of last year’s renewal at Southern Hills due to a back injury.

Currently 99 of the world’s top 100 players will be teeing it up at Oak Hill next week, with the only absentee being Will Zalatoris, who is out for the season following back surgery. Tiger Woods, who underwent ankle surgery last month, is also sidelined.
