Scheffler is pictured being detained by police after attempting to bypass a traffic jam caused by a fatal accident further up the road outside of Valhalla Golf Club

Master champion Scottie Scheffler has been released by Louisville Metro Police after being arrested while he was on his way to his second round tee time at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky early this morning (Friday).

The World No.1 was arrested and subsequently charged with second degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

According to eyewitness, it is understood that Scheffler had been driving to the course in the early morning when he got caught up in traffic behind a separate and unrelated incident outside the club in which a shuttle bus hit and killed a pedestrian.
Scheffler had attempted to bypass the accident to get to the course but was stopped by a police officer who attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car.

According to local reports, Scheffler’s detainment stemmed from continuing to drive when asked to stop, and his car then dragged the officer several yards before coming to a stop and being ordered to exit the vehicle.

The world No.1 did so and was shoved against the car by the officer before being placed in handcuffs and driven to the nearest police station where he was later charged and then released.

Scheffler, who shot a first-round 67 at Valhalla on Thursday, was supposed to tee off for his second round at 8.48am (1.48pm UK time) before the shuttle bus accident delayed play by 80 minutes.
