One of the biggest storylines from the 2025 Ryder Cup so far has been Rory McIlroy and his tense interactions with the patrons at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.
McIlroy and fellow Team Europe member Shane Lowry were seen allegedly flipping off someone in the gallery on Friday. It only escalated on Saturday as McIlroy was seen cursing at the crowd, refusing to putt until the crowd quieted down, screaming in jubilation after making a birdie putt and pointing to the scoreboard as Team Europe continued to pull away from Team USA. It got so bad that additional police officers and state troopers were added to the group’s security detail.
Despite the hostile conditions, McIlroy and Lowry defeated Justin Thomas and Cameron Young to stretch Team Europe’s lead to 10.5 to 3.5 McIlroy has played a big role in Team Europe’s success, going 3-0-1 during the first two days.
“When you plan away Ryder Cup, it’s really, really challenging,” McIlroy told NBC afterward when asked if the crowd took things too far. “You know, it’s not for me to say. People can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not. You know, I’m just proud of us for being able to win today with what we had to go through.”
But McIlroy was not the only golfer who played with an edge on Saturday. Bryson Dechambeau, for example, had to be restrained after having tense words with Justin Rose when DeChambeau’s caddie started going at it.
Saturday was yet another example of how the Ryder Cup is different than any other event in golf. And while the competition and enviornment brought out the best in some golfers, it got the better of others. For McIlroy, it was an example of his fiery spirit that has helped make him the best player of his generation.
