Director of Instruction at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond Makes History as the First 4-Time Senior Open of Virginia Winner, and First PGA of America Golf Professional to Win Back-to-Back Championships

Stafford, Va.  – Middle Atlantic PGA (MAPGA) Golf Professional Rick Schuller, the Director of Instruction at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond, VA, defended his Senior Open of Virginia title on September 9th at Independence Golf Club, in Midlothian, VA. He defeated a field of 72 amateurs and professionals aged 50 and over who all qualified for the event, including runner-up and fellow PGA of America Golf Professional, Jimmy Flippen (Waterfront Golf Club), by one shot after rounds of 69-72 for a total score of -3.

With the victory, Schuller becomes the Senior Open of Virginia’s first four-time winner, and the first PGA of America Golf Professional to win back-to-back championships.

“Rick is a Hall of Fame Member of the MAPGA and one of the most highly accomplished players within our Section,” said Jon Guhl, Executive Director, Middle Atlantic PGA. “Winning the Senior Open of Virginia for a fourth time continues his legacy and is another milestone in a storied career. We’re proud that he represents us on both the local and national levels as a PGA of America Golf Professional.”

A member of the Middle Atlantic Section of the PGA of America (MAPGA), the leading authority on the game and business of golf in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, Schuller is a decorated player at both the local and national level. On the national front, he has played in the National Club Pro Championship 15 times, and the PGA Championship 3 times (2001, 2003, 2016). He also played in 3 Senior PGA Championships, a US Amateur (1984) and two US Opens, while winning several prestigious golf tournaments around the country.

Schuller’s MAPGA Section playing record is almost impossible to quantify.  He has been an outstanding player in the Section for many years, winning  the Section Championship 4 times (’03, ’04, ’08, ’09) and was Section Player of the Year 5 times (’98, ’04, ’07, ’09, ’14) and Senior Player of the Year 7 times (’13, ’15, ’17, ’20, ’21, ’22, ‘24).

In 2009, he won both the National Match Play and the National Stroke Play on the way to winning National Player of the Year honors.  He also won the National Match Play in 2006 and 2011.  His list of playing accomplishments includes over 100 wins in MAPGA Section events and qualifiers, and in 2024 he was inducted into the MAPGA Hall of Fame.
