While the Masters and PGA Championship invite past winners for their annual tournaments, and the Open Championship exempts past champions under the age of 60, the U.S. Open is the least charitable. The 2025 U.S. Open will exempt just those who have won the major over the last 10 years, as anyone who won before 2015 needs another way to qualify. Fortunately, pre-2015 champions like Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose meet other qualifications and will join more recent winners like Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth in the 2025 U.S. Open field. The 125th edition of the major will begin on Thursday, June 12 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.

2025 U.S. Open predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2025 U.S. Open: Jon Rahm, a former U.S. Open champion and two-time major winner, stumbles and barely cracks the top 10. Rahm was in contention at the PGA Championship and even held a share of the lead in the final round. However, the Spaniard ended the round with a bogey and two double-bogeys over his final three holes, resulting in a T-8 finish.
Rahm had 11 bogeys or worse at the PGA Championship thanks in large part to his inaccuracy off the tee. Rahm finished the second major of the year with a 53.6% driving accuracy, which doesn’t bode well with the tough course conditions expected at Oakmont. Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a 33-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. A two-time PGA champion, Thomas’ game has seen a resurgence over the last year. He was ranked 25th in the world entering the 2024 U.S. Open but is now No. 5. He has four top-2 finishes this year including winning the RBC Heritage in late April. The only golfer with more top 10s on the PGA Tour than Thomas’ six this season are Scheffler’s eight.
Thomas has always been one of the best ball strikers, and this year is no different as he ranks among the top 10 in both strokes gained: tee-to-green and SG: approach the green. His work on the greens has finally caught up to his long game as Thomas tops all PGA Tour players in putting average. This combination has allowed him to break par on 27.66% of all holes, which is the highest percentage in golf. Breaking par at a tough course like Oakmont will be a challenge for many golfers, but Thomas’ game seems well-suited for success at the U.S. Open. See who else to pick here.
