Holliman isn’t worried about McIlroy’s bumpy road and is backing him to bounce back on a course where he has dominated. The Northern Irishman has nine top-10 finishes in 11 tries at the Wells Fargo Championship and won his first PGA Tour event in Charlotte. He was fifth last year at TPC Potomac, but will be happy to get back to Quail Hollow. His distance gives him a big edge there, as he leads the tour in driving distance (326.6 yards) and is second in strokes gained tee to green. The 33-year-old hasn’t played since missing the cut at the Masters, so Holliman expects him to be recharged.
On the flip side, Justin Thomas (21-1) has been consistent but has rarely been a contender, so Holliman is fading the two-time major champion. The 30-year-old got his first major title at the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, but he has stumbled since winning his second. His short game has kept him in the top 25 most weeks, but the rest of his game has been shaky. Thomas ranks 133rd in greens in regulation and 115th strokes gained putting.
