2023 Wells Fargo Championship fantasy golf picks, rankings, advice: Back Rory McIlroy, fade Justin Thomas

Another designated PGA Tour event brings out the stars again this week for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. Three-time tournament champion Rory McIlroy, defending champ Max Homa and Mexico Open winner Tony Finau are all among the competitors in the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship field. Homa’s win last year came at TPC Potomac, but he also has a Wells Fargo victory at Quail Hollow in 2019. Nine of the 12 American players who led the team to a Presidents Cup victory on the Charlotte course last fall are set to compete. All performed well there, and with so many players with strong track records, who should you choose for your 2023 Wells Fargo Championship fantasy picks?

McIlroy is the 15-2 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 Wells Fargo Championship odds. He has been inconsistent this season, but his success here is unmatched. Does he merit the top spot in your Wells Fargo Championship 2023 fantasy lineups? All nine American Presidents Cup members are among the 14 players at +3100 or shorter, so can a golfer like Finau (17-1), Homa (24-1) or even Sam Burns (31-1) set you up to win with your 2023 Wells Fargo Championship fantasy picks? Before setting your fantasy golf rankings or making any 2023 Wells Fargo Championship picks, you need to see the fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Jim Holliman.

Holliman has been a writer and editor for nearly 25 years and has been playing and following the game closely for more than three decades. The Florida-based writer knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour and how the players’ games fit the courses. Holliman has been on a roll since last season. He nailed the 2023 Masters, backing Rahm as his top choice, despite his uninspired run at Match Play. “The Spaniard wants a green jacket badly. Who doesn’t?,” Holliman said. “But Rahm will get it at some point, and I expect it to be this year.” The Spaniard showed how much he wanted it, storming to a four-shot victory and his second major title.

At the Players Championship, he was all over Scheffler to win at 10-1, and at Bay Hill, 11 of his picks finished in the top 15 and three of his top seven posted top-five finishes. The golf expert also was behind Chris Kirk at the Honda, backing the 25-1 shot to get his first victory since 2015. Anyone who has followed Holliman’s predictions is way up on their golf picks.

Now, Holliman has ranked his top golfers from the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship field. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Wells Fargo Championship picks at SportsLine.

Holliman isn’t worried about McIlroy’s bumpy road and is backing him to bounce back on a course where he has dominated. The Northern Irishman has nine top-10 finishes in 11 tries at the Wells Fargo Championship and won his first PGA Tour event in Charlotte. He was fifth last year at TPC Potomac, but will be happy to get back to Quail Hollow. His distance gives him a big edge there, as he leads the tour in driving distance (326.6 yards) and is second in strokes gained tee to green. The 33-year-old hasn’t played since missing the cut at the Masters, so Holliman expects him to be recharged.

On the flip side, Justin Thomas (21-1) has been consistent but has rarely been a contender, so Holliman is fading the two-time major champion. The 30-year-old got his first major title at the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, but he has stumbled since winning his second. His short game has kept him in the top 25 most weeks, but the rest of his game has been shaky. Thomas ranks 133rd in greens in regulation and 115th strokes gained putting. He has finished in the top 10 just four times in 18 tournaments since his victory at Southern Hills last summer. You can see who else to back this week at SportsLine.

How to set your 2023 Wells Fargo Championship golf rankings

For the Wells Fargo Championship 2023, Holliman is backing several longshots, including one golfer who comes in at well over 150-1 odds. This overlooked golfer has the combination of distance and accuracy to compete on this tough Quail Hollow layout and could stun the field. You can find out who it is, and check out all of Holliman’s PGA picks, only at SportsLine.

Who wins the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship? Who are the top PGA Tour players to target for your Wells Fargo Championship fantasy picks?
