The 2023 U.S. Open, golf’s third major of the year, takes place at Los Angeles Country Club beginning on Thursday. The U.S. Open 2023 will be the city’s first major championship in 28 years. Matt Fitzpatrick (2022), Jon Rahm (2021), and Bryson DeChambeau (2020), the tournament’s last three majors, all had winning scores of six-under-par. McClure’s model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm’s second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at +7000, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure’s best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, even though he hadn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2018.

Top 2023 U.S. Open predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the U.S. Open 2023: Max Homa, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles this week and doesn’t even crack the top 10. Homa is just one of four players to record multiple wins this season, but he’s been inconsistent in recent weeks.
The 32-year-old is coming off a top-10 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but he’s finished 43rd or worse in four of his last six starts on the PGA Tour. He’s also struggled on golf’s biggest stages, finishing 43rd or worse in his last four starts at a major championship, which includes a 47th-place showing at the U.S. Open in 2022. Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Morikawa has PGA Championship and Open Championship titles to his name, but the U.S. Open is the only major he’s logged multiple top-five finishes. With a fifth place last year and a fourth place in 2021, he’s the only player in the world with top-fives the last two years.
A Los Angeles native, Morikawa has experience at this course that most of the 2023 U.S. Open field lacks. In fact, he went 4-0 in match play at the 2017 Walker Cup, helping Team USA win the event. Add in that he’s one of two players on the PGA Tour to rank in the top 10 in driving accuracy percentage and greens in regulation percentage, and Morikawa has many avenues to rise up the 2023 U.S. Open leaderboard.
