2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational fantasy golf rankings, picks: Back Scottie Scheffler, avoid Rory McIlroy

The second leg of the PGA Tour Florida swing will be much different than the first, as a loaded field is set to tee off Thursday in the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational. The fourth designated event of the PGA Tour season will bring another round of tough decisions for players setting 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational fantasy lineups. Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy all have been world No. 1 during the past month, and all appear to be worthy Arnold Palmer Invitational 2023 fantasy picks. Rahm, the current No. 1, is the 7-1 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational odds, followed by McIlroy (19-2) and Scheffler (11-1).

With 23 of the world’s top 25 golfers in the field, elite options for Arnold Palmer Invitational fantasy lineups are plentiful. Should you go with established winners on big stages like Collin Morikawa (21-1) and Justin Thomas (23-1)? Or would recent winners like Max Homa (19-1) or Tony Finau (28-1) put you in a better position to win? Before you lock in your 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational fantasy golf picks or PGA Tour bets, you need to see the fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Jim Holliman.

Holliman has been a writer and editor for nearly 25 years and has been playing and following the game closely for more than three decades. The Florida-based writer knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour and how the players’ games fit the courses. The golf expert has been on a roll on his picks since last season. He was behind Chris Kirk last week, backing the 25-1 longshot to get his first victory since 2015. “He doesn’t have a tour victory in almost eight years,” Holliman said, “but this is a field where he could fix that.” The 37-year-old went out and shot 14 under, then beat Eric Cole in a playoff for his fifth PGA Tour victory.

Holliman also crushed the Genesis Invitational, backing Rahm after doubting him in previous weeks, and five of his top 12 picks finished in the top six. At the Phoenix Open, four of the expert’s top eight finished in the top 10, a group that included the winner, Scheffler.

Now, Holliman has ranked his top golfers from the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational field. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Arnold Palmer Invitational picks at SportsLine.

Holliman knows Scheffler will be motivated, and the expert is backing him based on his recent results. Scheffler won in Phoenix three weeks ago to regain the No. 1 ranking but lost it to Rahm when the Spaniard won the Genesis. Still, Scheffler finished T-12, his worst finish since October. He has four top-10’s in six events since then, averaging almost 16 under par over those six. That puts him third on tour in scoring average (69.232), and his all-around game is almost without peer. He is second in greens in regulation and fourth in strokes gained tee to green.

On the other hand, Holliman sees some flaws in McIlroy since he returned from dominating in Europe, so the expert is fading him. The Northern Irishman’s record at Bay Hill is impeccable, as he has finished in the top 10 five times in his past six outings. Still, he comes in ranking 189th in driving accuracy and 171st in strokes gained putting. That’s not a good combination for a place like Bay Hill. His past two tournaments have seen him finish T-32 and T-29. He certainly has the talent and experience to turn it around, but Holliman doesn’t rank him in his top five this week. You can see who else to back this week at SportsLine.

How to set your 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational golf rankings

For the Arnold Palmer Invitational 2023, Holliman is backing several longshots, including two players in his top 10 who are priced at almost 30-1. One of these golfers tends to be overlooked in these stacked fields, but he has a winning pedigree and the well-rounded game to succeed on tough courses. You can find out who it is, and check out all of Holliman’s PGA picks, only at SportsLine.
